Ariana Chong was the first Singaporean to read Music at Oxford University under the Singapore Public Service Commission (PSC) Scholarship. She attained her grade 8 in piano at the age of 13, LRSM Performance (Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music) at 16, and FTCL (Fellowship of the Trinity College of Music, London - the highest music diploma offered just before a music degree) at the age of 18. She was the only Singaporean in that year to be awarded the FTCL. Soon after her BA Honours Music degree, she was awarded the MA Music degree by Oxford University.
Ariana then proceeded to attain her second Master’s degree in Music from NIE (National Institute of Education) under its Music Research Scholarship. She has been highly active in the Arts scene, having been the musical director in the production of Dining With Ernest held at the Mandarin Ballroom, and having sung in productions with the Singapore Lyric Opera and in the Singapore Symphony Chorus. She has also conducted about 10 school choirs, and has helped schools win awards in the highly competitive SYF choir competitions. Besides having done numerous CD recordings with the choirs, she has also led choirs on performance tours to Europe and Australia.
Besides teaching, providing piano accompaniment and performing in concerts and functions by invitation, Ariana also serves on the committee of The Oxford and Cambridge Society of Singapore and is the pianist of the recently formed Cherwell Trio (piano, violin, cello) made up of Oxford graduates. She has performed in the presence of dignitaries like Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew, former British High Commissioner Paul Madden, former Chief Justice Yong Pung How, current Chief Justice Chan Sek Keong and Lord Patten of Barnes, the last Governor of Hong Kong and former EU Commissioner. Currently she is piano tutor to the daughters of Mrs Josephine Teo, Minister of State (Finance & Transport).
Ariana's mission is to help students learn music as a lifelong vocation and communicate the different emotional states of everyday life through music. |
