American pianist Brian Locke is acclaimed as one of the most promising rising stars in the classical scene today, having earned high regard and critical praise from musical partners and audience members alike. Remaining busy as both a solo and a collaborative pianist, Mr. Locke has appeared at the University of North Texas, the North Carolina School of the Arts, the Brevard Music Center (NC), as well as recent performances in Georgia, Michigan, South Carolina, and New York. He is the winner of numerous scholarships and prizes, including the Ruth Kern Young Artist Award (First Place) and the Bong Hi Kim scholarship (given by David Kim, concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra). He made his concerto debut with the Atlanta Community Symphony Orchestra under Maestro Juan Ramírez.
Noted as “the consummate accompanist”, Mr. Locke works with active professionals and budding artists alike. He has played with the Brevard Music Center Orchestra, members of the Atlanta Symphony, the Atlanta Opera, as well as many choral societies, religious music groups, and school ensembles throughout the Southeastern United States. He is in high demand as an interpreter of new music, having recently premiered new works by James Jensen, Leon Miodrag Lazarov Pashu, and Kenneth Frazelle.
Atop his busy performance schedule, Mr. Locke remains musically active in many other facets and as a leader in his community. He has served as music director and pianist for productions of Hairspray and 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at Workshop Theatre in Columbia, SC and as music director at Beth Shalom Synagogue. He created, organized, and performed in multi-disciplinary performances of Saint-Saëns’ Le Carnaval des Animaux combining music, art, poetry, and dance. In 2010, he served on the jury for the Arthur Fraser Int’l Concerto Competition. Formally of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral (Upper SC), he is the Baritone cantor at the Cathedral of St. Philip in Atlanta, GA.
Brian Locke holds the Bachelor of Music degree from the University of South Carolina. He is a three-year alumnus of the Brevard Music Center, attended the Southeastern Piano Festival (SC), and was one of 8 pianists chosen to attend the Heifetz International Music Institute (NH). His principal teachers are Martin Katz, Marina Lomazov, David Watkins, and Douglas Weeks; additional teachers include Lynn Kompass, Barry Snyder, André Watts, and Oxana Yablonskaya. He presently makes his home in Atlanta, Georgia. |
