Gustavo was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to parents of Russian and Italian descent. He first began playing his mother's electronic organ at age four, and by age eight was taking lessons in music theory, piano-accordion and trumpet. Before starting his formal education, he studied under maestros Francisco Sorrentino, Marcelo Delgado and José Amato. In 1997 he completed his graduate degrees in both piano performance and musical education at the IUNA Superior National Conservatory of Music of the National University of the Arts in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His teachers and mentors include Ana María Stigliano, Claudio Kanz (piano), Laly Escobar, Luis Arias (theory, audioperception and contemporary rhythmic), Antonio Russo (choir conducting), Ofelia Carvajal (harmony) and Claudio Schulkin (counterpoint). He also attended master classes with Iván Citera, Piotr Paleczny, Nelson Goerner, Alberto Portugheis, Pedro Memelsdorff and Winton Marsalis, among others.
After a one-week master-class series in 1995, Gustavo was selected by harpsichordist José Luis Gonzalez Uriol to pursue further studies on the barroque keyboard repertoire. During his years at the conservatory, he participated in an early music ensemble conducted by Andrés Gerszenzon, where he played the basso continuo part. His sight-reading skills allowed him to be selected to sing on the National Youth Choir under Maestro Néstor Zadoff for a performance of Bach's Magnificat and Vivaldi's Gloria in the Teatro Colón of Buenos Aires. He also toured Argentina as active member of Opera del Buen Ayre, directed by Eduardo F. Casullo, and performed chamber music with acclaimed Peruvian cellist Rafael Delgado Espinosa, with whom he won first prize in an audition for the National Congress Chamber Orchestra.
In addition, Gus is also a committed educator, having tutored students in piano, audioperception and music theory that have successfully passed the rigorous audition requirements of his alma mater, the National Music Conservatory.
Besides numerous appearances as soloist and chamber musician, Gus has also performed with worship leader and songwriter Bob Fitts, as well as with several ensembles/bands in Argentina, Australia, India and the US. Most recently (2006-2007), he was selected as the accompanist for the Fuller Vocal Ensemble, and is regularly invited to perform at various Fuller Seminary-sponsored events. Also, he has been Music Director at First Presbyterian church of Altadena for the past three years. While his improvisation skills allow him significant stylistic flexibility in terms of partnering with other musicians, Gus is especially drawn to representing Tango and folk Argentine music, which form an important part in his repertoire. |
