As a student Lucie Shores studied accompanying and coaching at the Conservatory of Vienna with professors Schilly, Richter, Randolph and Mueller. She performed with the conservatory orchestra under the guidance of the principal percussionist of the Vienna Symphony. She became the first female percussionist to perform with an orchestra in public in Austria and was offered a job as staff coach at the Volksoper when she was 19, but returned to the states to finish her degree at that time.
While finishing her undergraduate degree, she taught piano at the community college level, working with local opera companies, joining the faculty of the International Music Camp in Bottineau, ND for one season. In 1977 she returned to Europe as accompanist and participant in the First International Course for the Interpretation of Spanish Music, established by Ricardo Visus. In 1978 she was hired by the main house of the Conservatory of Music in Vienna as vocal coach and piano instructor. She performed multi-faceted services as coach, composer, teacher and director for the conservatory, local theater in Vienna, the American Institute for Musical Studies in Graz, Austria and, more recently, the Neil Seimer Vocal Institute in Coesfeld, Germany.
Among others, she has worked with and for coaches Geoffrey Parsons, Martin Katz, John Wustman, and singers Roberta Cunningham, Jose Luis Sola, John Uhlenhopp, Elizabeth Holleque, Julie Prohaska, Glenn Winslade, Elio Battaglia, Georg Tichy, Ricardo Visus, Waldemar Kmennt, and Christa Ludwig.
Shores toured in concert off and on for twenty years with well-known tenor Ricardo Visus and more recently tenor José Luis Sola, performing concerts in Austria, Spain, Switzerland and the United States under the auspices of various arts councils, universities, the Spanish Embassy in the US, and the Program for Cultural Cooperation Between Spain’s Ministry of Culture and United States Universities, as well as the Organization of American States in Washington, D.C.
Since her return to the Midwest to raise three sons, she has occasionally directed musicals, and produced opera. She graduated from seminary in 1994, and after moving to northern Minnesota, established The Creativity Tank, a publicly funded, non-profit organization whose mission is to “provide access to creative processes for change” by teaming artists with other professionals to work in a variety of settings. Shores maintains two studios in Minnesota. |
