Additional Info: Canadian-Czech pianist Martin Karlicek teaches piano at Schulich School of Music of McGill University and gives concerts as a soloist and a chamber musician. He has been hailed as “one of the most talented musicians of his generation, outstanding performer, mature experienced artist, first rate virtuoso musician” and his piano playing has been described as “inspiring, rich, sensitive, stylistically taut and arresting, precise, crisp, brilliantly controlled, wonderfully colorful and always imaginative. His very impressive command of the instrument comes out as a completely natural support of musical expression.” His performances, masterclasses and lectures have been enthusiastically received by audiences in the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Canada, Greece, U.S.A. and Japan.
Mr. Karlicek is a holder of the Bedrich Smetana Prize in the Bedrich Smetana International Piano Competition 1994 (2nd Prize: 1st not awarded) and the First Prize and Ferenc Liszt Prize in the South Bohemian International Piano Competition 1995. In addition, he received the Béla Bartók Prize, Leoš Janácek Prize and Bohuslav Martinu Prize in the Prague-Vienna-Budapest International Summer Academy Competition in 2001. In 2008 he and his wife, Japanese violinist Mana Shiraishi, established Duo Ventapane, receiving praise and admiration: “Duo Ventapane is an event to experience…”
Dr. Martin Karlícek studied at the Conservatoire in Plzen, Academy of Music in Prague (B.Mus, M.Mus), Utrecht Academy of the Arts in Holland and at McGill University in Montreal in Canada (M.Mus, D.Mus) and is a recipient of numerous Awards and Scholarships. Among his teachers were Kyoko Hashimoto, Anton Kuerti, Kveta Bilinská, Miroslav Langer, Karel Friesl, Ivan Moravec, Milan Škampa, Michael McMahon and Denys Bouliane.
