Where do accompanists go? Unless you know one personally they seem to hide in the background avoiding attention even though you know they're out there. How do people find accompanists if they're not in the music circle?

Excellent question. Probably the best beginning point is your local college or university.
This website is a true godsend to accompanists and people in need of accompanists.
Thank you to the creators !

I have only just come accross this website and have found it very useful in promoting myself as being self employed is often difficult to get work, only through word of mouth once you have been recognised for your musician skills.

I have found that word of mouth is the fastest way to find a new accompanist. Besides checking local colleges and music schools - I would check with local piano dealers and music stores, they tend to know who is in the area. You could also look up local piano teachers through websites that list teachers in your area (such as OMTA in Ohio). They may have advanced students who can accompany, or have colleagues that accompany as well as teach.
