Neil McFarlane was born in Glasgow in 1969 and studied with Elisabeth Jacobs at the Music School of Douglas Academy and then at RSAMD. During this time he appeared twice on BBC TV's 'Young Musician of the Year', as well as winning all the major prizes at RSAMD. He was then awarded a Caird Scholarship to study at the Guildhall School of Music in London, where his teachers included Gordon Back.
He has given duo and chamber concerts throughout Scotland and has recorded a CD, 300 Years of Music from Scotland with the violinist Hector Scott. He has broadcast for BBC Radio Scotland, BBC Radio 4 and Classic FM and has worked regularly as an accompanist at music festivals and auditions. He taught piano for 5 years at RSAMD Junior School and worked at the High School of Glasgow as full-time accompanist and piano teacher from 1994 to 2017. In the spring of 2013 he accompanied the High School's Chamber Choir as they performed in the televised finals of the BBC Songs of Praise School Choir of the Year, which they won.
Neil has been an ABRSM Examiner since 2000, and has examined Graded, Jazz and Diploma Exams in UK, Ireland, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, USA, Australia, Spain, South Africa, Italy, Saudi Arabia and India.
Neil worked with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra Junior Chorus from 1996 to 2010, and has also worked with the Glasgow Lyric Choir, Glasgow Grand Operatic Society, Paisley Philharmonic Choir, Strathclyde University Chorus and the Council for Music in Hospitals.
He has been called upon to adjudicate at competitions within many of Scotland's independent schools. Amongst others, he has had the occasion to play for Ofra Harnoy and John Wallace.
Neil and his family moved to Northern Ireland in 2017, where he continues to work as an examiner, accompanist and freelance musician. He is one of the team of accompanists at Queen's University Belfast (QUB), and is a deputy accompanist for Belfast Philharmonic Choir.
