Hi, I'm a 44 year old singer-songwriter and guitarist from Barnet, Hertfordshire. I'm searching for a competent (sight reading) piano accompanist (preferably female as I feel it creates a better 'balance') who enjoys playing songs from musicals (Lionel Bart, Rodgers & Hart, Don Black etc) and standards from the 30s - 50s from Gershwin, Porter, Berlin etc. and also newer melodic songs from artists such as Katie Melua, Cat Stevens, Gary Barlow and Neil Sedaka. I also enjoy singing my own songs (with over 30 written to date). I would particularly like to concentrate on the jazzier side and love the songs and style of Blossom Dearie.

For the past 11 years I have been performing at organisations, retirement homes, charities, open mics and community festivals - paid and unpaid (before that I performed in many amateur musicals and comedy revues). I unfortunately haven't been able to pursue my ambitions on a more professional level as I have not been able to find the right accompanist who also has enough time to commit to doing something together, as if they are of a decent standard, nine times out of ten they are understandably busy with other musical projects. I need to find someone who has the time to commit to a long term collaboration.

In October 2015 and January 2016 I was lucky enough to have been involved with 5 other professional singers in a staged showcase of original cabaret/musical style songs from a published composer/pianist - which was great fun and very satisfying. It fired up my creativity and ambitions and made me realise that this is what I really need to be doing, even if it is part time to begin with. It also reminded me that 'you know what, I CAN do this and pretty well!'

My aim is to make some money, have fun, enjoy my singing and ultimately to progress quickly - as I'm not getting any younger! I've got a nice voice (much more powerful and in a different style to when I'm singing some of my own songs which can be heard at www.marcharris.co.uk) and had singing lessons many years ago. In a nutshell, I love entertaining people with music and singing! I believe it is very important work, a privilege to do and very uplifting (for an audience and me).

There are a number of things I'd like to try or to continue doing. The occasional community event or charity (which usually would not be paid), perhaps the odd open mic event or a 'Sunday performance' at venues such as Pentameters Theatre in Hampstead and Sunday Buzz at Arts Depot in Finchley (where I could also sing my own songs), and perhaps some private functions for weddings and parties etc (as background music for receptions). I would ideally like to put a great set of songs together so that we can be up and running within a few months - ready to perform. I also have the very early stages of an idea for a children's musical but that will take some time!

I'm not looking to become famous by the way (I'm too old and not the right image for that) but it would be great to be able to make my way musically - performing, earning a living doing what I enjoy, writing and creating opportunities which one day could ultimately take over from my day job.

I look forward to speaking with you and hopefully meeting up in order to create a fresh sound - something unique and special...

Regards,

Marc - January 2016 (marcharris09@btinternet.com)

P.S. Please excuse the amount of information here - as I really enjoy writing!
