With over 20 years of accompaniment and chamber music experience, Matthew has performed in numerous recitals, competitions, auditions, and masterclasses. He has experience as a collaborative pianist with both vocalists and instrumentalists.
Matthew is an exceptional sight-reader and interpreter. He enjoys the spirit of collaborative music making and is a keen and sensitive listener.
Music has always been in Matthew’s blood. The son of professional musicians, he spent many evenings in the backstage of venues like the Metropolitan Opera and New York Philharmonic. Starting piano lessons at seven years old, his orchestral debut was a performance of the Stravinsky Concerto for Piano and Winds with the Salt Spring Concert Band in grade 8. He was later the winner of the 2013 Cowichan Consort concerto competition and finalist of the 2014 Don Chrysler Concerto Competition. As the youngest participant over several summers at the Bennington Chamber Music Conference, followed by summers at Music at Port Milford and the Bowdoin International Music Festival, he quickly developed a love for ensemble playing and collaborative music.
While completing degrees in physics and computer science, Matthew continued to study piano with Steven Massicotte at the Université de Montreal (UdeM) and Darryl Friesen at the University of Manitoba. Since 2023, Matthew and his wife Naomi (along with their dog Mabel and cat Fred), have called Belleville their home. They continue to perform together and with cellist Amber Walton-Amar (SWAG trio).
When Matthew is not pursuing music, or tennis, he works on automated science discovery through AI as a software developer.
