Borja Mariño was born in Vigo (Spain). He obtained Master Degrees in Piano, Solfege, Chamber Music, Composition and Musicology from the Royal Conservatory of Music (Madrid). In his career at the piano teachers Julius Andrejevas, Vladimira Smausova and So Young Moon have been crucial. He also studied Italian language in Perugia University (Italy).

He completed his training as opera répétiteur at Madrid’s ‘Teatro Real’ with advice and support from Mtro. Barton, Bini, Sawyer and Tyteka to all of whom he is deeply grateful. Latterly he has been contracted by the ‘Teatro Real’, where he worked in ten operas and numerous recitals and activities, ‘Teatro de la Zarzuela’, ‘Teatros del Canal’ and ‘Teatro de San Lorenzo de El Escorial’ (Madrid), ‘Gran Teatre del Liceu’ (Barcelona), ‘Teatro Calderón’ (Valladolid), ‘Teatro Campoamor’ (Oviedo), ‘Teatro Villamarta’ (Jerez), ‘Peralada Festival’ (Girona), Amazonas Opera Festival (Manaus, Brazil) and F.A.O.T. in Mexico. From 2002 he’s the main répétiteur and conductor of the inner band in ‘Amigos de la Ópera’ season at A Coruña, and from 2010 in ‘Teatro de la Maestranza’ (Seville).

His huge repertoire includes such a number of operas that he performed with conductors as Colin Davis, Lombard, Guingal, Gómez Martínez, Carella, Allemandi, Panni, Zedda, Armiliato, Rizzo, Weigle, Petrenko, Khan, Malheiro, Lipton, van Beek, Ros Marbá, Halffter, Collado, Pons, Albiach, Vicent… Among the great artists he has worked with during these seasons are: C. Vaness, J. van Dam, R. Scandiuzzi, M. Devia, D. Dessì, F. Armiliato, M. Berti, S. Carrolli, D. Rancatore, P. Ciofi, M. Giordani, R. Leech, D. Graves, R. Hale, S. Larin, E. Marton, D. O’Neill, M. Guleghina, L. Vaduva, N. Ansellem, F. de la Mora, F. Casanova, J. Pons, M. Bayo, I. Rey, A. Arteta, A. Blancas, M. Cantarero, N. F. Herrera, C. Gallardo – Domas, C. Albelo, B. Ford, D. Barcellona, F. Ellero D’Artegna, C. Colombara, A. Siragusa, E. Grunewald, D. Wilson-Johnson, A. Titus, E. Halfvarson, J. Juon, K. Streit, S. Anthony, J. Lapointe, B. Uria-Monzon, E. Coelho…

He has been musical director of La Voix Humaine by Poulenc which has toured various Spanish cities and he created two spectacles with the company Opera de Fondo: Zarzuela Hall (a cabaret show with Spanish music) and Dichterliebe… und Leben (in occasion of the centenary of Robert Schumann) both with mise-en-scène of Vanessa Martinez. He also took part in the theater piece Masterclass by Terrence McNally about Maria Callas.

He received the Jeunesses Musicales prize (1994) for accompanying piano and Young Concert Performer (1998) from the ‘’Xunta de Galicia’’ in the Chamber Music category. He is official pianist in the International Singing Competitions of Logroño, Ciudad de Zamora and Jury of the TIM (Torneo Internazionale di Musica).

Specialised in vocal repertoire, he coached many Spanish and International singers and has regularly performed at the most important concert halls across Spain (including Teatro Real, Auditorio Nacional de Madrid, Festival de Granada, Auditorio de Galicia); through the last ones we special remark a recital with mezzosopran Dolora Zajick and tenor Francisco Casanova. Furthermore, he has participated in the summer courses at El Escorial playing for Suso Mariategui as part of his ‘Singing Workshop’ and in the Giancarlo del Monaco’s Masterclasses at Alcala University.

Interested on Spanish composer I. Albeniz, because of his studies with Dr. Jacinto Torres, he worked in the world première of Merlin (Teatro Real, Madrid) and was assistant of Carol Vaness in the recording of Pepita Jiménez for Deutsche Grammophon label. In the centenary of the composer he directed a recital about his operas in Teatre del Liceu (Barcelona) and he prepared the critical edition of the score of The Magic Opal, one of his comic English operas, that was presented in the Auditorio Nacional de Musica (Madrid) in Feb. 2010 and it will be published by Tritó Editions next year.
