I am 64 years old, friendly, introspective, enjoy good humor.
The bent of my education and experience has been towards accompanying rather than solo performance. If you're looking for dynamic or subtle interweaving of soloist and pianist, hire me; if you're looking for glossy display of technique, don't. This is not to say I settle for mediocrity; it is merely the direction I go to achieve excellence.
Education: UC Santa Barbara (1969, BA, Music), Arizona State (1975, MMus.) Original instrument was organ, but I have been continuously involved as a piano accompanist from teenage years, from solos and choirs to musical comedy. I compose music dramas and improvise the piano parts from the score or chord sheets, and apply this skill to accompanying. I am skilled at writing and editing parts for other instruments. I transpose simple music fluently on sight a step or two in either direction, and can in a pinch transpose a classical selection by quickly parsing out chords in the new key.
In choral music and with soloists I go beyond the score to cue and amplify singer's parts, if they are in trouble or simply sing better with the help. Working with singers, I prefer to be encouraging, patient and kind, working to engender the love of music in the process of all the work it takes to create music. I am a capable coach for a singer or instrumentalist in general technique (voice) and musicianship. I work best with musicians who are happy with a goal of making truly beautiful music, and least effective with the self-occupied musician or perfectionist.
I play in many genres, but am most effective in classical, swing/blues/jazz (I can play a typical standard or show tune from a fake book), Latin, Jewish/Slavic, Assyrian, southern Gospel, but only the lighter forms of rock.

Fees

$ 30.00 Dollars Per Hour
$18 for a half-hour, $24 for 45 min, $30 for an hour. $50 for a performance (if I am required to come more than a half-hour early to rehearse, add time as appropriate).
If accompanying is for a wedding and I am primary musician, $200. For a funeral, $150.
