A native of Kansas City, Karen began her professional life in music at the age of 12 as a church organist; has spent over 40 years as a director of music, organist, pianist, vocalist and accompanist in churches and venues throughout the Kansas City area; and, has accompanied choral and orchestral groups for oratorio and chamber works. She has provided leadership as musical director and/or accompanist at local high schools for their performances and concerts; accompanied a variety of clinicians during their presentations at choral workshops throughout the country; and, in her service to churches, has played over 300 wedding ceremonies during her career. During the summers, Karen works with Theatre at Vis, a local not-for-profit group, as its musical director for student productions, also with their Lenten drama entitled, “Stations.”
In October, 2011, Ms. Engebretson was part of a commemorative concert featuring the music of Virgil Thomson, a Kansas City born composer, at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. The program, “An Evening with Virgil Thomson,” was filmed by PBS for future national broadcast.
Karen holds a Masters of Music degree in Organ Performance from the UMKC—Conservatory of Music, studying with Dr. John Obetz and had the opportunity to play for many great organists at various Masterclasses and workshops.
Her teaching experience has spanned several years. Working with students elementary through college level, she has taught general music, choir, class piano, music appreciation and music theory. Ms. Engebretson continues to maintain a private studio for piano, organ and voice. She is currently the music teacher at Holy Name Catholic School, and is the Director of Music at First Presbyterian Church in Leavenworth, Kansas.
