“Steve is a fantastic sight-reader and can play anything, even pieces in the contemporary repertoire. He’s reliable and a good sport, and a real pleasure to work with.” – Jennifer Lien, soprano

“Your calm, intellectual demeanor invited a deeper connection to the music. Decisions did not just stay at the surface: whether to take time, how to be together… rather, a larger architecture for each piece was sought and musical elements were built to make sense of the frame. It made for rewarding and exciting results!” – Alice Teyssier, flutist and soprano

“Steve Lewis plays with the utmost musical expression and thoughtfulness. Performing and working with Steve has always been rewarding and fun. Most of all he is humble about his talent, easy to work with, and extremely dependable.” – Michael Rounds, undergraduate trumpet student

“Stephen Lewis was an accompanist and Assistant Conductor for my festival Shaker Mountain Opera in Pittsfield, Mass. from 2001 – 2003. When he started with us he was 19 and did exemplary work. As a matter of fact, Stephen was the only staff person that I never had to think about. He was in charge, and did his work. And his work was beautifully done. As a colleague he was admired and liked by everyone. So, yes, I can give Stephen Lewis an unqualified recommendation. … He would be a great addition to any musical organization.” – Denes Striny, tenor, teacher, and conductor

“It was great to work with you for my DMA audition at UW. You were very knowledgeable about the repertoire, and when tempi differed, you were quick to adjust to my tempo. We were able to work together to solidify our tempo together. Your eased and calm nature was refreshing heading into my audition.” – Kara Lambert, soprano

Fees

RATES

I base my accompanying rates on a sliding scale determined by:

the amount of advance notice I receive
the difficulty of the repertoire
the level of the person hiring (e.g. pre-college, undergrad, grad student, professional)
for long-term projects, the amount of rehearsal time involved in the project
I charge a higher rate for a performance if we do not rehearse together beforehand. This applies to auditions, juries, masterclasses, performances, recitals and recordings. It does not apply to lessons.

POLICIES

For All:

Punctuality: Please be punctual to rehearsals! I will end rehearsals at the scheduled ending time regardless of when you arrive. If the delay is my fault, we will rehearse for the full amount of time agreed upon.

Cancellation: I require 24 hours’ notice to cancel a rehearsal, lesson, or performance without penalty. With any shorter cancellation notice or no-shows, I will expect payment for the time agreed upon. Exceptions are made, of course, for sudden emergencies, illnesses, and other grave matters outside of anybody’s control.

Payment: I accept cash or checks as payment. Please have exact change when paying in cash.

Receipts: I will provide a written invoice for temporary jobs. I will not provide an invoice for recurring jobs unless you request one.

Recordings: As a general rule, I do not record the piano part of any piece for someone to rehearse with, nor do I consider being sent a recording (a CD, a link to YouTube, etc.) as an appropriate stand-in for a rehearsal. In certain extreme circumstances, I will bend this rule, so please ask if you feel there is a need.

For Singers:

Please provide me with single-sided, non-taped and non-stapled copies of your repertoire. I will arrange the music in a binder in a way that makes the most sense for page turns, etc.
From recurring clients, I ask for payment either once per week or once every other week.

For Instrumentalists:

In the music, please mark any cuts with VI- and -DE at the appropriate places.
Please provide accurate metronome markings if they are not already provided.
